NAMA Facility participates in OECD Multilateral Development Finance Week

December 21, 2022

Johanna Riedmann, a NAMA Facility advisor and sector lead for Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU), shared lessons learnt from the experience gathered in this sector of the portfolio over the past ten years as part of a panel discussion on 08 December 2022.

The panel discussion, co-hosted by E3G at the OECD Multilateral Development Finance Week, consisted of speakers from think tanks, development agencies, and the private sector. It focused, in part, on challenges in land use finance.

During the discussion, Ms Riedmann called for participatory approaches and highlighted the challenges of outreach of financial institutions in rural areas. Ms Riedmann also drew attention to informal financial services, which play a significant role, as a result of this problem. Lastly, she underscored safeguards (e.g., environmental, social, and economic) as building blocks for project sustainability.

Currently, AFOLU projects represent 19% of the total portfolio. Some example projects in implementation include Costa Rica Low-Carbon Coffee, which is nearing completion this year, as well as Guatemala Sustainable Cookstoves and Palestine Low-Carbon Olive Value Chain. To learn about the AFOLU sector, read this report prepared by the NAMA Facility in spring 2022.

The event recording can be accessed through the E3G website.
