The NAMA Support Project “Transformative Investments in Industrial Energy Efficiency in Brazil” was officially launched on the 8th of September 2021 during an online event. TI4E is funded by the NAMA Facility and supports greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in small and medium-sized industrial (SMEs) enterprises through capacity development, innovative financial mechanisms and policy advisory. TI4E will directly mobilise energy efficiency investments in the region of São Paulo, considering its large concentration of industries and high energy consumption. The project will support the development of new financial mechanisms and public policies at the national level to leverage the country’s significant GHG mitigation potentials through increased energy efficiency.
Speakers from the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), National Service of Industrial Training (SENAI), Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP), German Embassy, Delegation of the European Union and the British Embassy emphasised TI4E’s relevance for Brazil’s low carbon and sustainable industrial development and the momentum to launch this program. The country faces a lack of rainfall and the lowest water inflows at hydroelectric reservoirs in more than 90 years. This increases electricity prices significantly and may be further exacerbated through climate change.
As TI4E’s political partner, Secretary of Energy Planning and Development at MME, Paulo Cezar Magalhães Domingues, underscored the important role of industrial energy efficiency to achieve Brazil’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement and the program’s innovative approach to drive transformational change. According to Heiko Thoms, German Ambassador to Brazil, TI4E is a very special example on how to align ambitious climate action, sustainable business models and economic interests. Stefan Agne, the Head of EU Cooperation, and Simon Wood, British Consul General, stressed TI4E’s strategic partnerships with key players linked to the energy, industry and financial sectors in Brazil to unlock an emissions reduction potential of approximately 1.1 million tons of CO2 equivalents over 10 years based on investments to be mobilised within the program. The President of FIESP and SENAI-SP, Paulo Skaf, further highlighted energy efficiency as a fundamental strategy to increase industrial SMEs’ competitiveness and resilience to an energy crisis going forward. At the occasion, Paulo Skaf signed an agreement to kickstart TI4E’s project development process based on energy audits to be realised in around 1000 small and medium industries in São Paulo.
The online event attracted more than 500 participants and the recordings generated approximately 2100 views so far. More than 80 industrial SMEs have already submitted their application for support through the program’s website just a few days after the event. As a next step TI4E’s energy efficiency expects will collect energy consumption data and carry out analysis of the SMEs’ industrial facilities. In parallel, the program is setting up a Guarantee Fund with the State Development Bank of São Paulo (Desenvolve SP) to improve SMEs’ access to energy efficiency financing, among many other activities.
Please note that the program’s Brazilian name in Portuguese is “PotencializEE”, which stands for potentializing energy efficiency opportunities.
