The NAMA Support Project Sustainable Urban Transport Programme Indonesia (SUTRI NAMA) and its project component Indonesian Bus Rapid Transit Corridor Development Project (INDOBUS) have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) (Persero) to develop and expand cooperation in the field of sustainable transport in Indonesia. The agreement also opens up chances for prospective project financing collaboration between the signatories and more specifically under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) framework.

In line with the MoU, SUTRI NAMA and PT SMI have pledged their commitments to work together on the Integrated Sustainable Bus Rapid Transit Development project to be implemented in Semarang, Central Java. A concept note on this project was jointly developed by PT SMI and GIZ to request for support from the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) scheme of GCF. The proposed project is aimed at reducing GHG emissions by developing a BRT system as the backbone for a mass urban transport system that meets international standards in Semarang. The BRT is expected to connect Kawasan Kota Lama (Old City quarter) and Kawasan Jalan Pemuda with the existing bus services operated by Trans Semarang.

More specifically, SUTRI NAMA will be assisting PT SMI in developing a feasibility study in order to ensure project bankability and the achievement of the desired impact for climate change mitigation. Implementation of the project is foreseen to be co-financed by the GCF together with PT SMI, the NAMA Facility through GIZ, as well as the national and local governments.

PT SMI is a state-owned infrastructure financing company. It not only facilitates infrastructure financing, but also conducts project preparation and provides advisory services for infrastructure projects in Indonesia. PT SMI also serves as a catalyst in accelerating infrastructure development in Indonesia by securing partnerships with private and/or multilateral financial institutions within the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
