On October 26th, 2017, at the Museo Rufino Tamayo, the closing event of the NAMA Support Project, Technical Component, was held to celebrate the achievements of the past four years of cooperation for sustainable housing in Mexico.
The event consisted of two parts, the first one included dialogues between the three countries that made up the project. They spoke about the future of housing policy in Mexico, green financing, Mexico’s role for International Cooperation, the New programs on existing housing and the results of the last four years of cooperation.
Representatives of the Mexican government, the German and British embassies as well as representatives of the private initiative participated. Each dialogue featured a question and answer session, giving a space for attendees to express their doubts and comments about future achievements and challenges to continue promoting sustainable housing in Mexico. Representatives from Infonavit, the Embassy of Germany, the British Embassy and CONAVI participated giving a final speech.
Mexico was the first country in the world to develop a NAMA focused on sustainable social housing, which is why it is currently the most advanced in its implementation and its technical design, in addition to being the first one financed by the NAMA Facility; the Mexican government has supported the acquisition of more than 83 thousand 860 homes under the NAMA criteria, surpassing the expectations at the beginning of this administration.
Currently two out of every 10 homes are built under the NAMA standard and the federal government achieved with these actions the mitigation of 47 thousand tons of CO2. The “Mesa Transversal de Vivienda Sustentable” (the Transversal Table of Sustainable Housing) was promoted; the sustainability criteria for the different housing programs implemented by the institutions that today are dedicated to serving Mexican families were approved, workshops and awareness campaigns were carried out nationwide through “Mi casa es mi mundo” (My house is my world) and the participation of housing developers was increased more than three times in the last three years.
Finally, Mexican families have benefited from having access to a better home at the same price; by enjoying the improvement of thermal comfort inside their homes; and above all with the reduction in their consumption of gas, electricity and water; and, therefore, in the related expenses.
The financial component of NAMA Facility, supported by the German Development Credit Bank, KfW, and implemented in Mexico by the Sociedad Hipotecaria Federal, (SHF) will continue operations and develop projects until 2020.
