As the world faces the increasing urgency of the climate crisis, sectoral decarbonisation has emerged as a critical pathway to achieving global climate goals. The energy, industry, and transport sectors, which account for more than two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, must undergo deep transitions to limit global warming to a 1.5°C a temperature rise from pre-industrial time that might prevent or reduce many of the most dramatic effects of climate change.
The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, provides a unique opportunity to accelerate sectoral transformations, galvanising nations to increase their climate ambitions and take decisive action. It is within this context that this report highlights the pivotal role sectoral decarbonisation plays in driving a sustainable, just, and equitable global transition, with real-life examples of Mitigation Action Facility projects.
