Wrapping up 2025: highlights and warm wishes from the Mitigation Action Facility

December 31, 2025

As 2025 comes to a close, the Mitigation Action Facility reflects on a year of commitment, collaboration, and tangible progress in advancing transformational climate action. From strengthening partnerships to supporting ambitious mitigation projects, this year has showcased the power of collective effort in driving carbon-neutral development.

A year of change and leadership

2025 also marks a transition for our Technical Support Unit (TSU). We warmly thank Dr. Sören David for nearly a decade of leadership, guiding the transition from the NAMA Facility to the Mitigation Action Facility, strengthening partnerships, and championing people-driven climate solutions. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Philipp Munzinger as the new Head of the TSU, bringing fresh momentum and renewed ambition for the Facility’s work in 2026 and beyond.

This year’s launch of the Call for Projects 2026 at COP30 in Belém introduced refinements to the Call processes and the new optional Lighthouse Pilot Projects modality and inviting applicants to submit Project Concepts in energy, industry, transport, and cross-sectional initiatives. The Concept Phase is open until 25 February 2026, 3 p.m. CET – a great opportunity for ambitious project ideas to enter the Mitigation Action Facility portfolio.

Key highlights from 2025

Expanding our portfolio: Our portfolio grew to 66 projects worldwide. From preparation to implementation, these projects demonstrate measurable climate impact and sectoral transformation.

Inclusive climate action: The launch of the GESI Analysis 2025 provides practical insights into promoting gender equality and social inclusion across energy, transport, and industry sectors, guiding project teams and policymakers alike.

Enhanced monitoring and learning: The rollout of TolaData, our new monitoring and project data management tool, has streamlined portfolio-level reporting, ensuring robust, high-quality evidence of mitigation results.

Responsible carbon markets: The publication of our Policy on Carbon Markets outlines principles for scalable, high-integrity carbon market engagement aligned with the Paris Agreement.

Knowledge sharing: Final as well as md-term Evaluation and Learning Exercises (ELEs), sector knowledge briefs, and new reports have documented lessons, fostering co-learning across projects and geographies.

Events and engagements: 2025 was a year of vibrant exchanges, including COP30 in Belém – launching the 2026 Call for Projects; Africa Climate Summit – showcasing collaborative project successes; GCF Private Investment for Climate Conference and OECD Forum on Green Finance – engaging global leaders on transformative climate finance; Transport and Climate Change Week and UNFCCC Pitch Hub – providing platforms to share insights and foster partnerships; and many more.

Looking ahead

As we move into 2026, we invite applicants to submit their Project Concepts for the Call for Projects 2026 before 25 February 2026, 3 p.m. CET. This is your chance to contribute to transformational climate action and be part of a growing network driving carbon-neutral solutions.
