Spotlight on Renewable Energy for Earth Day: How the Mitigation Action Facility promotes “Our Power, Our Planet”

This Earth Day, under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet”, the call to expand access to renewable energy worldwide resonates strongly with the mission of the Mitigation Action Facility. As a multi-donor fund committed to transformative climate action, we prioritise innovative, sectoral decarbonisation focusing, among others on energy as a priority sector. Accelerating the global transition to clean power is essential to achieving the Paris Agreement goals – and to creating lasting, inclusive impact across our partner countries.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report, the energy sector is responsible for 34% of global annual emissions. But investing in renewable energy goes far beyond reducing emissions – it also improves health, creates economic opportunities, and increases energy security.
At the Mitigation Action Facility, decarbonising the energy sector is at the heart of our mission. Since inception, we have supported 20 energy-related projects, with more than half (11) directly targeting access to renewable energy. From empowering energy communities to enhancing grids and scaling up solar PV installations, we are proud to contribute to a low-emissions future.

How the Mitigation Action Facility drives renewable energy adoption
Through a combination of financial and technical support, we empower countries to implement impactful renewable energy solutions. We currently support nine renewable energy projects, eight of which are active. Five are already under implementation and making tangible progress across different regions:
Tunisia Clean Energy in Buildings
- Budget: EUR 15.1 million
- Mitigation potential: 910,000 tCO2e
Closely working with the Tunisian Ministry for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy, the Tunisian Company of Electricity and the National Agency for Energy Conservation, this project is installing solar PV systems and making solar energy more accessible to mid-income households by reducing costs.
- Budget: EUR 10.9 million
- Mitigation potential: 1.5 million tCO₂e
Under implementation since 2023, this project supports small and medium enterprises (SMEs) adopt solar PV solutions, increasing self-sufficiency in the industrial sector.
- Budget: EUR 20 million
- Mitigation potential: 1.2 million tCO₂e
In close collaboration with the Department of Energy (DoE) and Philippine Climate Change Commission (CCC), this project pioneers the update of tidal stream energy (TSE), aligned with national climate goals.
Kenya Post-Harvesting Solar-Cooling
- Budget: EUR 23.1 million
- Mitigation potential: 63,321 tCO₂e
Selected under the Ambition Initiative, this project aims to install 1,000 solar-powered cold storage units to reduce post-harvest losses, in partnership with UNDP and national ministries.
- Budget: EUR 17.8 million
- Mitigation potential: 4.7 million tCO₂e
This project intends to ensure the successful expansion of renewable energy through the development of a 450 MW pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES) system.

A milestone achieved: Chile Renewable Energy project completed
In late 2024, we celebrated the completion of the Chile Renewable Energy project – our first renewable energy initiative to conclude successfully. With EUR 18 million in support as well as technical assistance by the Mitigation Action Facility, the project enabled SMEs to implement self-supply renewable energy systems.
Looking Forward
We continue to build on our commitment to clean energy. Three renewable energy projects are in the pipeline, selected under the past three Calls for Projects:
Together, these projects are projected to mitigate over 900,000 tCO2 once implemented. Read more about these and other projects across our portfolio here.
