Spotlight on our priority sectors: Insights from sector leads and success stories from completed projects

January 21, 2026

As part of our ongoing focus on the Mitigation Action Facility’s three priority sectors – energy,  industry, and transport – we are delighted to share insights from our sector leads at the Technical Support Unit (TSU), along with highlights from one completed project in each sector. These stories demonstrate how targeted climate action can deliver tangible results on the ground, while motivating new applicants for our Call for Projects 2026, open until 25 February 2026

Energy efficiency in the residential building sector

Energy sector lead Juan David notes:

“Transforming an energy system is not just a technical problem; we have known the basics of these technologies for a long time. However, successfully scaling cleaner energy sources requires aligning financing, policy, capacity development, and local engagement with the technology development we already have.”

A strong example of this in practice is the Mexico – Housing project, which supported the construction of affordable, energy-efficient homes. By integrating energy-efficient design and technologies into housing standards, the project achieved measurable reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, while improving comfort and lowering utility costs for residents.

Industrial transformation in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) sector

For the industry sector, our sector lead Pär Gebauer shares a key lesson:

Countries pursue different target corridors and operate within global financial and trading systems. This creates varying opportunities and risks in the transformation of their industries and economies. To implement meaningful measures that deliver sustainable benefits and strengthen countries’ economic and social fabric, these framework conditions must be thoroughly understood. Measures should be aligned with national industrial policy priorities and seek to balance economic, social, environmental, and climate objectives. Only then can measures achieve sustainable impact and gain the support of countries, their politics and their people. Broad collaboration is essential: effective climate solutions only take hold and scale when governments, industry, finance and civil society work well together.”

The Thailand – RAC project exemplifies this collaborative approach. By introducing energy-efficient and low-global-warming-potential RAC technologies, the project helped phase in sustainable solutions across industrial and commercial settings. This resulted in significant reductions in energy demand and emissions, while strengthening local capacities.

Sustainable urban transport systems

Transport sector lead Alexandra Neubert highlights a systems perspective:

“Change in transport is a systems challenge: policies, technology, and behaviour must evolve together to achieve meaningful climate impact. Successful interventions start with understanding how people and goods move today, and then redesigning the system as a whole to make low-carbon transport the better option.”

The Indonesia –Transport project demonstrates how integrated urban mobility solutions can reduce emissions while enhancing accessibility. By promoting sustainable transport planning, improving public transport infrastructure, and supporting non-motorised transport options, the project contributed to cleaner, safer, and more efficient urban mobility systems.

Take part: open Call for Projects 2026

These completed projects showcase the impact achievable when mitigation strategies are tailored to sectoral needs and implemented through strong partnerships. As we continue to scale climate action, we invite stakeholders working in the energy, industry, and transport sectors to submit Project Concepts to the Mitigation Action Facility’s Open Call for Projects 2026.

Deadline: 25 February 2026, 3 p.m. CET
