Record-breaking interest in the Mitigation Action Facility’s Call for Projects

The Mitigation Action Facility has received a record number of submissions in the Concept Phase of its latest Call for Projects. In total, more than 900 Project Concepts were submitted – the highest number ever received – demonstrating growing global demand for ambitious sectoral decarbonisation and climate investment.
The strong response highlights increasing interest from governments, financial institutions, and implementing organisations seeking to accelerate low-carbon transitions in developing and emerging economies. The diversity of submissions reflects a broad range of innovative approaches to reducing emissions across key sectors. A preliminary review indicates promising potential for the development of Lighthouse Pilot Projects as new modality.
As part of the submission process, applicants indicated which of the Mitigation Action Facility’s three priority sectors their proposed projects target. Most submissions focus on the energy sector, while the remaining Concepts address decarbonisation in industry and transport.

The geographic distribution of submissions reflects the global reach of the Call for Projects. Africa accounts for the largest share, followed by Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean, with a smaller number of Concepts targeting countries in Europe or spanning multiple regions. Notably, several submissions came from Nigeria, highlighting growing engagement in the country following the successful In-Country Call Promotion in October 2025.

The Concept Phase marks the first step in the Mitigation Action Facility’s project selection process. Selected applicants will be invited to develop full Proposals in the next stage, with the most promising initiatives ultimately joining our growing portfolio of climate mitigation projects.
Applicant feedback shows a very high level of satisfaction with the submission process, appreciating clear, well-structured supporting materials and templates. Many also highlighted that improvements in guidance, communication, and the application process contributed to a smoother and more positive experience.
We thank all applicants for their strong engagement and innovative ideas and look forward to the next stage of the selection process.
