Mitigation Action Facility Workshop in Berlin on Decarbonising Industries in Hard to Abate Sectors (Steel, Cement, Chemicals)
We are pleased to report that on the 28th and 29th of October the Mitigation Action Facility hosted a two-day workshop in Berlin on decarbonising the industry sector! Our event successfully brought together sector experts, implementation practitioners, representatives from the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF), and our donors. Together, we explored challenges, trends, and opportunities in decarbonising the steel, cement, and chemical industries in developing and newly-industrialising countries.
Combined, these three key industrial sectors account for around 70% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the whole industry sector. This makes identifying possible approaches towards the decarbonisation of steel, cement, and chemicals a crucial step towards decarbonising industry all-together.
During our event, we focussed on selected decarbonisation technologies and we delved into the complex financial landscape for decarbonisation projects in developing and emerging countries. Innovative financing instruments and public-private partnerships are just some of the various funding options explored by our participants throughout the workshop.
In addition to established and tested decarbonisation technologies, the workshop showcased cutting-edge technologies that have the potential to revolutionise industrial processes and significantly reduce emissions. From carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) to hydrogen-based technologies, we discussed the latest advancements and their practical applications.
The Mitigation Action Facility’s own Industry projects served as valuable examples for participants. We heard from practitioners actively involved in efforts to decarbonise these sectors in developing and newly-industrialising countries. Through these case studes, participants gained valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by successful projects. Our speakers provided observations from their experience that can help guide and inspire our participants with their own endeavours.
We discussed strategies for accelerating transformative change, and the role that appropriate regulatory frameworks and financial instruments can play in achieving this goal. We concluded our discussions by looking to the future and brainstorming the focus areas for future investment. We brought together our broad knowledge to identify key developing and emerging countries where targeted projects could drive sustainable, low-carbon industrial development.
For the Mitigation Action Facility and the workshop participants, the event provided important impetus for further conceptual and project-related orientation. Our event served as a platform for sharing insights and fostering collaboration to address the complex issues involved in furthering sustainable practices and reducing emissions in these critical industrial sectors.
