As the year comes to a close, the Mitigation Action Facility marks an important moment of transition: after nearly a decade of leadership, Dr. Sören David has handed over the role of Head of the Technical Support Unit (TSU) to Philipp Munzinger. This shift offers both an opportunity to reflect on the Mitigation Action Facility’s evolution and to look ahead to the next chapter of strengthening transformational climate action worldwide.

A decade of shaping transformational climate finance Sören has been instrumental in shaping the Mitigation Action Facility’s mission, guiding the transition from the former NAMA Facility to today’s Mitigation Action Facility, expanding partnerships, and building a programme that translates ambition into measurable climate impact.

Reflecting on his tenure, Sören shared what has been most rewarding:

He highlighted how the programme has matured over time:

For Sören, one lessonstood above the rest:

Looking ahead, he remains confident in the Mitigation Action Facility’s direction:

“My hope is that the Mitigation Action Facility continues to be a pioneer: scaling up what works, inspiring others, and staying true to its mission of transformational change. I’m confident that with our dedicated team and partners, we’ll continue turning ambition into action worldwide.”

The Mitigation Action Facility is pleased to welcome Philipp Munzinger as the new Head of the TSU. Philipp brings extensive international experience in sustainable energy systems, climate-friendly technologies, and financing strategies.

With more than 16 years of experience advising governments and industries, he most recently served as Cluster Coordinator and Programme Director for Energy Transition at GIZ Viet Nam, working closely with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to accelerate the country’s clean energy transformation. His work focused on renewable energy, smart grids, battery storage, and green hydrogen.

Previously, Philipp led the Asia portfolio of GIZ’S global Proklima programme, driving the uptake of climate-friendly and energy-efficient cooling technologies.

In a recent conversation, Philipp shared what motivates him for his new role at the Technical Support Unit:

“The Mitigation Action Facility’s mission, to drive transformational climate action through innovative finance, has always been deeply inspiring to me. It combines impact, partnership, and ambition in a way few initiatives do.”

Looking ahead, he sees strong momentum:

As he begins his new role, Philipp sends a message to the team and partners:

Looking forward

With wholeheartedly gratitude to Dr. Sören David for nearly a decade of dedication, and with warm welcome to Philipp Munzinger, the Mitigation Action Facility enters 2026 with strong foundations and renewed ambition.

We look forward to continuing our mission: turning climate ambition into transformational action worldwide.
