In preparation for the upcoming Call for Projects 2026, to be officially launched at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the Mitigation Action Facility’s Technical Support Unit (TSU) conducted a targeted In-Country Call Promotion (ICCP) outreach mission to Nigeria. The mission, led by Dr. Sören David, Head of the TSU, aimed to strengthen engagement with national stakeholders and support the development and prioritisation of ambitious, fundable project ideas aligned with Nigeria’s climate agenda.
From 27-31 October 2025, the TSU met with representatives from key ministries, financial institutions, and development partners in Abuja and Lagos. The discussions focused on raising awareness of the Mitigation Action Facility’s funding priorities, eligibility criteria, and application process for the new Call for Projects, while also exploring potential project ideas in the energy, transport, and industry sectors.
The mission provided a valuable platform to:
Foster collaboration between Nigerian institutions and eligible implementing entities.
Encourage project proposals grounded in national strategies and NDC priorities.
Explore synergies with ongoing initiatives by partners such as the NDC Partnership, UNDP, and the European Union.
Highlights included meetings with the Federal Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Federal Ministry of Finance as well as focused roundtables with representatives from the energy, transport, and industry sectors. Consultations in Lagos brought together financial institutions, alongside private sector stakeholders to discuss financing mechanisms for transformational climate action.
“Nigeria plays a key role in driving climate ambition in Africa. Through this mission, we aim to foster stronger national ownership and enable access to the Mitigation Action Facility’s support for projects that can deliver long-term, scalable impact,”
said Dr. Sören David, Head of the Technical Support Unit.
The in-country mission marks an important step in our outreach efforts ahead of the Call for Projects 2026, supporting the development of innovative, ambitious and feasible climate mitigation projects.
