On April 24, 2025, Pär Gebauer, our Industry lead at the Technical Support Unit (TSU), represented the Mitigation Action Facility at a Climate Club roundtable focused on financing instruments for industry decarbonisation. The online event brought together 35 participants – including policymakers, industry associations, project developers, and financial institutions – to exchange best practices on mobilising private capital in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs).
The roundtable aimed to:
- Collect feedback on the Climate Club Financial Toolkit, which presents 28 economic, de-risking, and financial instrument, and
- Gather real-world examples of industry decarbonisation initiatives.
Pär presented the Facility’s holistic approach to project appraisal, highlighting the importance of considering financial but also technological, political, socio-economic, and cultural conditions for a successful industry transition. He showcased how grant-based financial support helps ease the burden on weaker economies, making sustainable impact more achievable.
Participants emphasised the need for tailored financing solutions across different sectors and settings, underlining the value of knowledge sharing through tools like the Climate Club Financial Toolkit. The discussion echoed the urgent need to scale up investments in industrial decarbonisation by three to five times by 2030 to meet net-zero targets – particularly in EMDEs where financial and technical assistance remains limited.
The TSU contribution sparked direct interest from stakeholders, with Annie Heaton, CEO of Responsible Steel, requesting to connect with the Facility via the OECD Climate Club.
As we move forward, Mitigation Action Facility will continue its collaboration under Pillar 3 of the Climate Club – “Boosting international cooperation and partnerships”, with a focus on leveraging private and public finance. The next engagement will be at the Climate Club workshop and discussion on ‘Capacity development, policy consultation and advice on 14 May 2025.
