Behind the Mitigation Action Facility: Meet the Technical Support Unit

What happens between an ambitious climate project idea and lasting impact on the ground?
Behind every stage of the Mitigation Action Facility’s work is a team bringing together technical, financial, operational and thematic expertise: the Technical Support Unit (TSU).
The TSU serves as the secretariat and portfolio manager of the Mitigation Action Facility, managing its day-to-day activities on behalf of the Board and acting as a focal point for governments, project partners, Implementation Organisations and other stakeholders.
But what does that mean in practice?
Supporting projects throughout their journey
The TSU’s work spans the full Mitigation Action Facility project cycle.
It organises the Calls for Projects and assessment processes, supports selected projects during their preparation, and accompanies funded projects throughout implementation. This includes coordinating and providing expertise on areas ranging from mitigation and financial mechanisms to monitoring, evaluation and learning, risk management, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), communications and knowledge management.
At the same time, colleagues work across portfolio management, finance and contracting, strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement – connecting individual project experience with the wider objectives of the Mitigation Action Facility.
This breadth is important because transformational climate projects rarely succeed through financing alone. They require sound project design, appropriate financing mechanisms, strong partnerships, robust monitoring, effective risk management and the ability to learn and adapt along the way.
One mandate, different perspectives
The TSU therefore brings together colleagues with different professional backgrounds and areas of expertise – but a shared objective: creating the conditions for ambitious mitigation projects to succeed and achieve lasting impact.
We asked colleagues from across the TSU what this looks like from their perspective.
On accompanying projects from ambitious ideas through preparation and implementation.
On creating the financial, contractual and administrative conditions projects need to deliver.
On connecting people, knowledge and experience across the portfolio and beyond.
Together, these perspectives illustrate an important part of the TSU’s mandate: project support is a team effort. Different areas of expertise come together throughout the project journey, helping projects navigate challenges, strengthen their approaches and translate climate ambition into implementation.
Meet the people behind the work
Who better to explain the TSU than the people doing the work themselves?
In this short video, colleagues share what motivates them, what happens behind the scenes and what they believe makes the Technical Support Unit unique:
From assessing new project ideas and advising projects to managing contracts, monitoring results, facilitating learning and building partnerships, the work may look different across the team – but it contributes to the same mandate.
Because the Mitigation Action Facility does more than provide climate finance: through the TSU, it accompanies projects throughout their journey and connects expertise, evidence and experience to help maximise their potential for transformational change.
