Advancing Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI): New MAF Factsheet Highlights Commitment to GESI

At the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF), we believe that climate action is most effective when it leaves no one behind. Recognising this, the MAF has placed GESI at the heart of its mission. With the introduction of an ambitious Gender Vision in September 2022, the MAF deepened its commitment to gender justice – ensuring that all people, regardless of gender identity or social background, have equal rights, opportunities, and decision-making power in climate mitigation initiatives.
This vision is brought to life through the MAF’s Gender Action Plan (GAP), which applies to all MAF-funded projects. To support projects in meeting these requirements, the Technical Support Unit (TSU) provides targeted workshops, expert training, and close guidance. By offering tailored assistance to navigate context-specific challenges, the TSU helps projects structurally embed GESI actions into their work.
Key Insights from New GESI Factsheet
The newly launched GESI Factsheet highlights the MAF’s strategic approach and concrete achievements in embedding GESI principles into climate mitigation projects worldwide.
The factsheet details the MAF’s efforts to:
- Integrate GESI for Project Success: Embedding gender equality and social inclusion considerations into project design, implementation, and evaluation to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of climate solutions.
- Empower Underrepresented Groups: Supporting capacity building, employment opportunities, and leadership roles for marginalized communities within climate-related sectors.
- Promote Equitable Access: Ensuring fair access to climate finance and technical solutions for all stakeholders. By strengthening the integration of GESI in climate mitigation projects, the MAF aims to address systemic inequalities and amplify social co-benefits.

Transforming Climate Action Through GESI: Project Examples
SincThe MAF is committed to fostering gender-responsive, and where possible, gender-transformative climate action. This means not only addressing immediate gender gaps but also tackling the root causes of marginalisation and discrimination through particularly ambitious initiatives. By challenging entrenched social norms and power dynamics, MAF-supported projects drive meaningful change.
As part of its GAP implementation, the MAF facilitates transformative pilot activities that test and scale innovative approaches for greater social impact within climate action. These pilot activities serve as good practice examples, demonstrating how such strategies can complement climate mitigation efforts.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening GESI in Climate Mitigation
The Mitigation Action Facility remains steadfast in its commitment to integrating GESI in all our projects. Our work to empower women and individuals from marginalised groups, challenge gender stereotypes, and close gender data gaps continues to grow. As we continue to embed GESI into our project design and implementation, we are confident that we are building a fairer future where climate solutions are not only sustainable but also equitable for all.
